Interdisciplinary scientist Marianne Denton’s recent tweet observing a lack of diverse science GIFs grabbed our attention. Our subsequent Google search on “engineering” proved she was right.
We asked Marianne how this makes her feel: “It’s an insult. I’m not suggesting the GIF finder get rid of [Bill] Nye or NdGT (Neil deGrasse-Tyson). It’s about equal representation of competence.”
From the pronouns we use to images we share, Marianne reminds us we’re sending a message about what engineering is and who it’s for: “STEM communicators can ask themselves, ‘Can a woman be equally portrayed here?’ They should consider their entire audience.”
