Digital transformation plays a powerful role in keeping people safe. Companies are embracing it to revamp their safety programs. Phillips 66 recently turned a warehouse-sized building at its Humber Refinery in the United Kingdom into a high-tech training center, complete with a virtual reality room.
Employees and contractors can train at 10 staged safety scenarios, including climbing a two-story structure to prepare for working at heights and learning how to properly handle combustible or flammable materials.
In “The Cave,” trainees are surrounded by floor-to-ceiling screens simulating the refinery’s interior. Using a tablet, they interact with the screens and identify potential hazards.
